Head-to-head
Avira vs Norton
A generous free tier against a broad paid bundle — both from Gen Digital. How to tell which one fits.

The short version
Avira and Norton share a parent company but start from opposite ends. Avira is free-first: its free suite adds a capped VPN, a password manager and a software updater, and Avira Prime covers five or 25 devices with an unlimited VPN. Norton is paid-first: its higher tiers bundle antivirus with a VPN, cloud backup and other tools. If you want to start free and upgrade only if needed, Avira fits; if you'll use a broad bundle across the household, Norton does.

How to choose between them
- Decide whether free covers you. For one or two well-kept devices, Avira's free tier — or the protection built into Windows and macOS — may be enough.
- Count the extras you'd pay for. Norton's value is the bundle, including cloud backup. If you won't use it, a lighter plan does the same core job.
- Check the US-specific details. Avira lists dark web monitoring for Prime, but only for residents of Germany. If identity monitoring matters in the US, look at what Norton's tiers include.
- Compare renewal prices. Both discount the first term; the renewal is the real ongoing cost.
