Head-to-head
Avira vs McAfee
A free-first suite against a paid plan built for big households. How to tell which one fits.

The short version
Avira starts free: according to Avira's site, its free suite adds a VPN capped at 500 MB a month on desktop, a password manager and browser protection to the antivirus, and Avira Prime covers five or 25 devices with an unlimited VPN. McAfee is paid-first and built around breadth: one subscription spanning a household's Windows PCs, Macs and phones, with a VPN and identity monitoring in every plan and credit tools on the higher ones. One or two devices and a wish to start free point to Avira; a busy, mixed-device household — especially in the US, where Avira's dark web monitoring isn't offered — points to McAfee.

How to choose between them
- Decide whether free covers you. For one or two well-kept devices, Avira's free tier — or the protection built into Windows and macOS — may be enough. McAfee is primarily a paid subscription.
- Count your devices. Both offer plans for many devices; Avira Prime lists five or 25. Size the plan to your real household, phones included.
- Decide whether you want identity monitoring. McAfee's higher tiers bundle it. Avira lists dark web monitoring for Prime, but only for residents of Germany.
- Compare renewal prices. McAfee takes renewal payments ahead of the term ending, and Avira says renewal prices may be higher than the first term — compare year two, not just the offer.
