The buying guide

Four things worth getting right before you pay — education, not fear.

01

How to choose antivirus software

Start from your devices, not the marketing tier. Count every laptop, phone and tablet you want covered and note each operating system. That number decides the plan — a 'premium' tier you half-use is worse value than the right-sized plan. Then weigh the extras (VPN, password manager, identity monitoring) only if you'll actually use them, and always read the renewal price, not just the first-year offer.

02

Check what's sold in the UK

Plans sold in the UK aren't the same as in the US. Norton's LifeLock identity-theft plans are US-only, McAfee's credit monitoring and credit freeze tools don't appear on its UK plans, and Avira's dark web monitoring is limited to residents of Germany. Prices are in pounds, and refund windows differ by brand — Norton lists 60 days on annual plans; McAfee, Avast and TotalAV list 30 days.

03

Windows 11, Mac and phones

On Windows 11, Microsoft Defender already provides real-time protection, so a paid suite earns its place through scope and extras rather than basic scanning. Macs are lower-risk but not risk-free, and on phones the operating system limits what any security app can do — iPhone apps can't scan other apps at all — so mobile protection leans on web and scam-link warnings.

04

Free vs paid protection

Built-in protection is a genuine baseline and may be enough for a single, well-maintained device. The case for paid is strongest at household scale: many devices, several operating systems, and one place to manage and check coverage — plus the bundled extras if you need them.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best antivirus in the UK?
It depends on what you need to protect. For an all-in-one bundle, we pick Norton; for a simple setup, TotalAV; for many devices across a family, McAfee; for a familiar all-rounder, Avast; and for the most generous free tier, Avira. All five sell to UK readers, but some features differ from the US plans — see the notes on each pick.
How do you decide what counts as the 'best' antivirus?
We weigh documented protection coverage, platform fit, pricing transparency and trade-offs for a given use case. We do not rank by commission, and we do not publish numeric scores unless a reproducible rubric backs them.
Where do I see the price in pounds (GBP)?
On each vendor's official UK checkout. Antivirus pricing changes with promotions, and first-term prices typically rise at renewal — so compare the renewal price, not just the introductory offer.
Do you earn money from these links?
We earn a commission if you buy through the partner buttons, which are labelled 'Ad'. The relationship is explained in our disclosure, and it never influences our assessment.
